Recapturing the Flight Plan

Tasked to develop future concepts for the flight deck, my team researched landing situations where delayed clearances dramatically increase pilots cognitive load and push the airplane toward the limit of its performance capacity. Pilots cope with these situations, “slam dunk approaches” based on their expertise and intuition, but little support exists in their visual representations to distribute the cognitive work. We envisioned a display that is tied to the pilot's information needs that could be called up during a slam dunk. As the situation escalates, this display affords the pilot to anticipate the interventions necessary to make slam dunk as well as to plan for the reconnection to the planned flight path and ultimate landing.
